Understanding USB4 versus USB-C: Key Differences and When to Upgrade

USB-C describes the connector shape, while USB4 is the latest data standard that uses that connector and offers up to 40 Gbps speeds.

USB-C is simply the reversible connector found on many modern gadgets, but it does not guarantee any particular performance level. USB4, introduced in 2019, is the most recent USB specification and always employs a USB-C plug, delivering up to 40 Gbps of throughput and supporting video output, power delivery, and data transfer over a single cable. Older computers built before 2019 are limited to USB 3.2, which caps at 10-20 Gbps, so plugging a USB4 device into such a port will restrict it to the lower speed.

Users can verify USB4 support by checking for a USB4 or Thunderbolt logo on the port or reviewing the product documentation. The higher bandwidth benefits tasks like moving large 4K video files, connecting dual high-resolution displays, or using external graphics enclosures. However, for basic peripherals such as keyboards and mice, upgrading solely for USB4 may not be necessary.
