Unexpected layoffs hit Hungarian staff at SK On's Iváncsa battery plant
Several Hungarian workers were suddenly dismissed from SK On Hungary's battery factory in Iváncsa, and the union says more cuts may follow.
According to the Liga youth workers' union, a group of Hungarian employees at SK On Hungary's Iváncsa battery factory were unexpectedly terminated on Wednesday. SK On Hungary acknowledged the layoffs in a statement, explaining that adapting the plant to present business conditions forced unavoidable staffing decisions. The union has asked the employer for full information on the planned workforce reductions and their justification, stressing that the immediate dismissals could violate human dignity and labor law.
It also raised concerns about recent large occupational safety fines imposed on the company and requested clarification on the penalties, the affected workers, and corrective safety measures. The union called for timely, comprehensive communication from management about future plans and for joint negotiations to resolve the issues.
Why it matters
The layoffs raise concerns about job security and compliance with labor and safety regulations in Hungary's growing battery sector.
