UNHCR reports over 492,000 Afghans forcibly returned by Iran in 2026
The UN refugee agency says Iran has expelled more than 492,000 Afghans this year, accounting for 85% of all Afghan departures.
UNHCR data released on October 8 indicates that Iran has forcibly removed more than 492,000 Afghans in 2026, which is 85% of the 581,600 Afghans who have left the country this year. The agency highlighted the pressure this creates on housing, basic services and job markets in Afghanistan and on host communities. Since February 28, 475,400 people have crossed back, with 398,100 identified as deportations.
Women and children account for 39% of the returnees, and children alone make up 27%. Among returning household heads, 67% have never received formal education and half lack job skills. The top destinations are Herat (21%), Kabul (10%), Farah (8%), Kunduz (7%) and Nimroz (5%). UNHCR has expanded operations at border points, assisted over 32,670 households, provided relief kits to 2,345 families, transported 874 individuals and served hot meals to 205,658 returnees.
Why it matters
Mass forced returns strain Afghanistan's resources and raise humanitarian concerns for vulnerable families.
