UNICEF reports one in five teens suffer online sexual abuse
A new UNICEF survey reveals that one in five young people aged 12-17 experienced sexual abuse on the internet during the past year.
UNICEF’s latest global survey of roughly 21 000 internet-using youths in 21 countries shows that one in five adolescents faced online sexual abuse in the previous year. Over 15 million respondents saw unwanted sexual content; 9 million were coerced into sexual chats or asked to share explicit images, and 4 million had such images shared without their permission. Forty-one percent kept silent about the incident, and less than one percent involved law enforcement.
Known acquaintances accounted for 57 percent of offenders, whereas strangers were involved in only 16 percent of cases. The report identifies Meta-owned platforms - Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - as the source of 60 percent of assaults, followed by Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube, with 14 percent occurring on gaming services. Data were gathered from participants in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 100 survivors.
