Union Coal Minister says higher demand and monsoon delays haven't caused a coal shortage

At an industry event in Angul, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy addressed reports of a coal shortage at power plants. He explained that thermal power demand has risen by roughly 12-15 percent while hydropower generation has declined, prompting greater reliance on coal. Monsoon weather has caused short-term disruptions to mining activities, but the ministry continues to move coal via rail rakes and road convoys.

Reddy stressed that these hiccups should not be interpreted as a shortage and described the supply situation as normal and tension-free. He reaffirmed that the country’s coal supply chain remains intact despite the temporary challenges.
