Union hits historic low in poll as AfD pulls ahead by double digits
A new Insa poll shows the Union at its worst ever nationwide rating, while the AfD leads with a sizable margin.
In a fresh Insa poll ordered by one outlet, the Union registers its lowest ever nationwide rating, a historic slump for the party. The AfD expands its advantage, breaking the 30-percent mark and establishing a lead of roughly thirteen points over the Union. The CDU falls to its poorest showing in a national survey, while the Greens and SPD are tied for a distant third place.
The Left improves slightly, and the Wagenknecht-party stays at a low level, with the FDP edging up but still far from entering the Bundestag. Combined, the three governing parties total just over thirty percent, far short of a majority and leaving the AfD in a strong position. Forming a coalition without the FDP appears increasingly difficult, and the only viable option would be a so-called Kenya coalition of Union, SPD and Greens, though its stability is uncertain.
Why it matters
The poll signals a dramatic shift in German politics, threatening the governing coalition's stability.
