Union ministers' 2025-26 disclosures reveal crypto holdings, foreign assets and rural livestock

Recent asset filings show Indian cabinet members own cryptocurrency, overseas funds, Delhi-NCR real estate, and even cows and sheep.

Asset declarations submitted for the 2025-26 fiscal year by 30 Union cabinet ministers and five ministers of state with independent charge reveal a heterogeneous mix of wealth. While some officials listed traditional assets like agricultural land and livestock—HD Kumaraswamy reported 34 cows and 273 sheep, and Jitan Ram Manjhi noted four cows and three calves—others disclosed modern holdings such as cryptocurrency, with Jayant Chaudhary and his wife Charu Singh being the only ones to do so.

Foreign investments are concentrated in the Scindia family, whose filings show holdings in UK, US, European and Japanese funds managed by BlackRock, iShares, Vanguard and Schroders. About a third of the ministers own property in the Delhi-NCR region, yet most did not declare personal automobiles, and firearm disclosures were limited to a few names. Senior figures like Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nirmala Sithoraman listed no cars, while Kishan Reddy noted a 1995 Maruti 800. The disclosures underscore that much of the wealth stems from family inheritance or pre-ministerial acquisitions rather than earnings from office.

Why it matters

The filings illustrate the blend of traditional and modern assets among Indian politicians, highlighting transparency and wealth sources.
