Unions and business lobby oppose possible shift of Beat Jans to Economy Ministry

Swiss unions and the business federation have voiced resistance as Beat Jans may move from Justice to the Economy Ministry after Guy Parmelin’s resignation.

Guy Parmelin’s resignation has opened the Economy Department (WBF) to speculation about a cabinet reshuffle in the Swiss Federal Council. Beat Jans, currently Justice Minister, is reported to be interested in swapping portfolios to become the first Social Democratic head of the economy ministry. This prospect has drawn opposition from both the business sector and labour unions.

Economiesuisse president Silvan Wildhaber warned that the ministry should remain under “bourgeois” control, while Travail Suisse president Adrian Wüthrich, a former SP national councilor, argued that a Social Democrat at the helm would likely pursue a left-leaning economic policy, citing past compromises such as the wage-protection deal under Parmelin. Jans, who has faced sharp criticism from the SVP over his asylum stance, views the shift as a welcome change. Rumours also suggest Defence Minister Martin Pfister may be considering a departmental move, though details remain unclear.

Why it matters

A shift could reshape Switzerland's economic policy and affect relations between government, business and labour.
