Unison and Glasgow City Council Reach New Pay Agreement Amid Fire-and-Rehire Dispute
Unison has accepted a revised pay package from Glasgow City Council, including three years of pay protection, after intensive talks over a fire-and-rehire plan.
After weeks of bargaining, Unison agreed to a fresh pay deal with Glasgow City Council that provides three years of pay protection for employees facing potential losses. The agreement also suspends any fire-and-rehire notices during the upcoming ballot, giving staff time to assess the new grading system. Council leader Ricky Bell said the deal eliminates the need to dismiss and re-engage staff and moves toward ending discriminatory pay structures.
Unison branch secretary Chris Sermanni stressed that the union has not accepted the full package and will keep pressing for improvements. The council will keep negotiating on issues such as lower-paid roles, allowances, unevaluated jobs and equality impacts before the membership votes. Other unions, including GMB and Unite, have also agreed to present the deal to their members.
Why it matters
The deal could reshape pay structures for thousands of Glasgow workers and set a precedent for handling fire-and-rehire plans in the UK.
