Unite urges Labour to intervene as Britain’s largest gas storage faces shutdown

Unite the Union is calling on Labour to stop the closure of the Rough gas storage site, which threatens 450 jobs and UK energy security.

Britain’s biggest gas storage hub, the Rough field off the Yorkshire coast, is at risk of closing, putting roughly 450 jobs at stake. Centrica, the operator, will not extend production beyond April 2027 unless it receives a “cap and floor” pricing scheme that secures minimum earnings while limiting profits. The company claims a £2 billion redevelopment would boost energy security and lower price volatility, but the government has so far treated the decision as commercial.

Unite the Union has pressed Labour to intervene, warning that the shutdown would jeopardise the lights and heat for households, and has floated the idea of nationalising the asset if private funding cannot be secured. The union highlights the site's potential to store hydrogen in the future, linking it to the net-zero transition.

Why it matters

The fate of Rough affects UK energy security and hundreds of jobs, making government action crucial.
