United Airlines flight returns to Dublin after crew reports fuel smell and health symptoms

A United Airlines flight bound for Newark turned back to Dublin Airport after the crew detected a strong fuel odor and experienced headaches and nasal irritation.

United Airlines flight UA-316 left Dublin for Newark at approximately 2:10 p.m. and reached an altitude of 31,000 feet before the crew announced a strong fuel smell while flying over the Irish coast near Co Mayo. Although they did not believe a fuel leak was present, the pilots declared an emergency, executed a U-turn, and requested an overweight landing on runway 28R, the airport’s newest and longest runway. They also asked for medical personnel because five flight attendants reported intense headaches and a burning sensation in their nasal passages, and an unspecified number of passengers required care.

Dublin Airport Fire and Rescue, along with medical teams, prepared for the arrival. The aircraft touched down shortly after 3 p.m., taxied to the terminal, and was met by ambulance staff. No further details have been released pending comments from the airline.
