United flight to Newark diverts to Las Vegas after engine trouble
A United Airlines Boeing 757 bound for Newark was forced to land in Las Vegas when an engine problem was detected at cruise altitude.
United Airlines flight 1403, a Boeing 757 departing Los Angeles for Newark, experienced an engine malfunction while cruising at roughly 31,000 feet. The crew opted for an emergency landing at Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport, where the plane touched down without injury to the 176 passengers and seven crew members. After deplaning, those on board are awaiting placement on an alternate flight to Newark Liberty International Airport, according to a United spokesperson.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the engine issue and announced an investigation into the cause. This event occurs days after a Delta Air Lines flight from LAX to Boston was diverted to Detroit because of a pilot’s medical emergency. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific nature of the engine fault.
