Universal Music Group partners with ElevenLabs to launch AI-driven music remix platform

Universal Music Group has signed a broad licensing agreement with AI audio firm ElevenLabs to create a new platform that lets fans remix and personalize tracks from UMG’s catalog.

Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have entered an extensive licensing pact that will underpin a new AI music platform built on UMG’s extensive artist catalog. The service will enable fans to remix songs, produce novel track versions and craft personalized vocal experiences using ElevenLabs’ generative audio technology. Executives Lucian Grainge and Mati Staniszewski emphasized that the venture seeks to center artists, songwriters and listeners, while opening additional revenue opportunities and ensuring fair compensation.

This collaboration expands on earlier AI projects such as UMG’s work with Hook and Udio, and arrives shortly after Suno launched label-backed models with Warner Music Group, Believe and BMG. UMG and Sony Music Entertainment remain in court disputes with Suno over alleged copyright infringement. ElevenLabs, valued at $11 billion after a recent $500 million Series D round, has also released AI-co-created albums featuring artists like Liza Minelli and Art Garfunkel.

Why it matters

The partnership could reshape how listeners interact with music and create new revenue models for artists.
