University of Liverpool aims to grow Bengaluru campus to 10,000 students by 2036

The University of Liverpool plans to boost its Bengaluru campus from roughly 300 to 10,000 students within a decade, adding two to three new programmes each year.

Vice-Chancellor Tim Jones announced that the University of Liverpool’s Bengaluru campus, which began with six undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, will expand from roughly 300 students in its inaugural year to 10,000 by 2036. The university intends to launch two to three additional courses each year, with psychology among the options under review, to broaden both academic scope and research collaboration. Existing partnerships with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences and the Indian Institute of Science will be deepened, while new industry agreements will provide internships and guest lecturers.

Jones noted that biomedical sciences is currently the most popular programme and that the student body already includes individuals from Karnataka, other Indian states and several countries. He also highlighted the integration of AI literacy across all curricula and plans to promote student mobility between India and the UK. The expansion mirrors the university’s successful growth model in China, where Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University grew from 164 to over 26,000 students.

Why it matters

The plan will broaden higher-education capacity in Bengaluru and deepen UK-India academic and industry connections.
