University of Maastricht suspends Gaza student after disputed video interpretation

A first-year Palestinian student at Maastricht University was placed on indefinite suspension following a controversial video that was misinterpreted by a regional journalist.

In late September, a video featuring a Palestinian student from Gaza studying at Maastricht University circulated on X, showing him gesturing toward a report and saying a phrase in Arabic. The phrase was initially reported as a claim of involvement in a violent incident, prompting the university’s highest governing body to suspend the student indefinitely. A journalist from L1 requested a translator’s analysis; the expert determined the words meant “take me out,” a routine expression in Levantine Arabic.

The student has since received death threats and been forced to hide, while the public prosecutor announced no criminal investigation. No correction has been issued by the university or media outlets since the story broke.

Why it matters

The case highlights how misinterpretations can lead to severe academic and personal consequences for students.
