Roehampton University has introduced esports scholarships worth £2,000 for students who can balance academic work with high-level video-game competition. Mark Ellul, the university registrar, said the awards recognise talent in a rapidly growing field. Scholars will take part in weekly university leagues and attend live tournaments on behalf of the institution, with minimum game rankings required, though large streaming audiences may also qualify candidates.
Former recipient Cameron Dray highlighted the financial relief the funds provided in an expensive city and noted the clear, transparent conditions attached to the award. Student-finance adviser Tom Allingham warned that many such funds go unclaimed due to low awareness, while players like Thomas Cole see the scholarships as a way to reduce financial stress and improve academic performance.
