Unreleased Early Tolkien Manuscript Published in French After More Than a Century

A previously unpublished early work by J.R.R. Tolkien, written when he was in his twenties, has now been released in French.

An early, unfinished manuscript by J.R.R. Tolkien, composed during his early twenties between 1912 and 1916, has been published in French for the first time. The work, created before Tolkien was sent to the front in 1916 and fought at the Somme, showcases his youthful enthusiasm for mythic narratives.

Although the author never completed the piece, scholars believe he may have attempted to return to it later without success. The new French edition joins a wave of previously hidden Tolkien material that has emerged following renewed interest sparked by recent film adaptations. This publication offers linguists and fans fresh material to study Tolkien's developing world-building techniques.
