UPI reaches record 24.51 billion transactions in August amid festive surge
In August, the Unified Payments Interface processed a historic 24.51 billion transactions, driven by festive spending, according to NPCI data.
Data released by the National Payments Corporation of India showed that August saw UPI handle 24.51 billion transactions, the first month to exceed 24 billion. The total value of these payments reached Rs 29.82 lakh crore, nearly matching the May-July 2026 high of Rs 29.9 lakh crore. Compared with the same month last year, volume was up 22% and value rose 20%.
The surge was linked to Raksha Bandhan, which increased peer-to-peer transfers and low-value gifting, according to Cashfree Payments co-founder Reeju Datta. Deepak Chand Thakur, co-founder and CEO of Network People Services Technologies, said the upcoming festive period and new functionalities such as credit on UPI will drive further growth. Since its 2016 launch, UPI’s annual transaction count has jumped from 1.78 crore to over 24,162 crore, and the system is now accepted in 11 countries, the latest being Uzbekistan.
