Upper section of Sněžka cable car halted by strong winds, hikers advised to use crampons

The upper cabin lift on Sněžka will not run today because winds may reach 60 km/h, and visitors are urged to use crampons on icy ground.

The upper part of the cable car serving Sněžka has been suspended for the entire day because wind gusts may reach 60 km/h, according to Lanová dráha Sněžka. Jiří Špetla, the lift's operations manager, cautioned that the ground is icy and recommended that climbers wear crampons. With the lift out of service, hikers can continue on foot along a 2.5 km path from Růžová hora to the peak.

Meanwhile, the remaining lifts in the eastern Krkonoše mountains are still running, though weather may affect them later. A frontal system is bringing cloud cover, rain and occasional snow above 1100 m, with valley temperatures of 7-12 °C and mountain highs just above zero, while winds gust up to 90 km/h.

Why it matters

The suspension disrupts tourist travel and underscores hazardous mountain weather for hikers.
