Upper West Side grocery Barzini's faces eviction after $1M rent arrears

Barzini's, an Upper West Side grocery that opened in 1983, is slated to leave its Broadway premises after the landlord obtained a court-approved eviction following more than $1 million in unpaid rent. The landlord’s lawyer noted that a million-dollar rent waiver had been offered, yet the tenant remained unable to pay. The market had previously faced health-code violations, with inspectors finding live and dead rats, beetles in grain, and seven-year-old expired cheese.

Longtime patrons voiced disappointment, recalling the store’s role in providing specialty items for generations. The 3,600-square-foot space is now advertised as immediately available for division among up to three new occupants. While “everything must go” signs appeared, staff claim the inventory surplus, not a closure, prompted the displays, and the exact final day remains unclear.
