Uriarra villagers question a 520-MW battery project near Canberra
Residents of Uriarra Village say they back renewable energy but lack clear information on a proposed 520-megawatt battery that could affect their rural surroundings.
Quinbrook has submitted a proposal for a 520-megawatt battery storage site near Uriarra Village, roughly 30 kilometres west of Canberra’s centre. The village, prized for its tranquil setting at the foothills of the Brindabellas, has voiced concerns that the industrial installation could introduce noise, light and visual pollution to the area. Residents Alison Thomas and Jeremy Hagan expressed support for renewable-energy storage but stressed the need for detailed answers on noise levels, bushfire modelling and lighting, which they say were not provided at the sole community briefing held so far.
Quinbrook responded that the design is still being finalised to reduce the footprint, protect cultural heritage and comply with noise and lighting regulations, and it plans a second engagement session in October. The proposal is currently under review by the federal government for approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
Why it matters
The outcome will determine how large-scale renewable infrastructure coexists with rural communities near a capital city.
