US Air Force F-15E jets make emergency landing at Ireland's Shannon Airport
Two United States Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles diverted to Shannon Airport after one reported a fuel problem over the North Atlantic, landing safely with emergency protocols in place.
During an afternoon flight over the North Atlantic, one of two United States Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles reported a fuel problem and sought an emergency diversion to Shannon Airport in Ireland. The aircraft received priority clearance and was escorted by a second jet, which also landed shortly after. Irish fire and rescue services, along with the Coast Guard and RNLI lifeboats from Inis Mór and Kilrush, were placed on alert but did not need to intervene on the runway.
After landing at 4.34 pm, both jets taxied to a remote stand away from the main apron. The aircraft are stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and had left RAF Mildenhall following a deployment in the Middle East earlier in the month.
Why it matters
The incident shows how international coordination handles military emergencies far from home bases.
