US Air Force Pursues Low-Cost, Mass-Produced Drone to Replace MQ-9 Reaper

The Air Force is developing a cheaper, mass-produced “Massed Modular Aircraft” to replace the costly MQ-9 Reaper after losing about 30 units in the Iran conflict.

For nearly twenty years the MQ-9 Reaper has been the workhorse of US drone warfare, delivering long-duration ISR and precision strikes across the Middle East. However, during Operation Epic Fury against Iran the platform suffered about 30 shoot-downs, exposing the unsustainability of its roughly $30 million price tag against increasingly sophisticated air defenses. The Air Force, guided by the Defense Innovation Unit, is therefore launching a “Massed Modular Aircraft” (MMA) program that seeks inexpensive, mass-produced UAVs capable of autonomous flight and swarm coordination.

Unlike the current Reaper, which relies on ground-based pilots, the MMA drones would be largely self-directing, with human operators managing groups rather than individual aircraft. The program aims to field fleets that can endure attrition while delivering persistent ISR, strike, and overwatch missions, differentiating it from the Collaborative Combat Aircraft project that targets air-to-air combat roles. This development underscores a strategic pivot toward quantity, distribution and resilience in future US aerial warfare.
