US and Allies Warn of Imminent Sudan Famine, Call for Unhindered Aid
The United States and dozens of nations said Sudan faces a sharp decline in food security and urged all parties to remove obstacles to humanitarian assistance.
A coalition of the United States, Australia, Britain, France, Germany and additional countries issued a joint declaration highlighting an alarming drop in Sudan's food security and the looming risk of famine. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has identified 5.1 million Sudanese as severely hungry, while conflict and drought have hampered harvests. The signatories pressed the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to clear all cross-line and cross-border pathways, including air access to Darfur, and to safeguard humanitarian personnel.
They also called on the international community and financial institutions to scale up aid financing and adjust existing programs to the crisis. The statement reiterated that the combatants bear primary responsibility for easing civilian suffering.
Why it matters
