US and China to set up bilateral channel for AI incident communication

The United States and China plan to set up a formal communication channel aimed at sharing details of incidents involving artificial intelligence, according to a White House announcement on Friday. The initiative was part of talks held during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, which highlighted growing concerns over AI safety. Xi stressed that both countries share the responsibility to develop and manage AI for the common good while keeping human control.

President Donald Trump described the technology as “superintelligence” and expressed a desire to keep regulatory measures unchanged. Earlier in the week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent proposed a notification system for AI incidents that might impact national security, underscoring a push for greater transparency between the two powers.
