US and Romania Conclude Four-Day Workshop on Counter-Drone Strategies, Draft National Action Plan

US Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg closed a four-day C-UAS workshop in Romania’s parliament, where officials from both nations outlined a new national plan to counter unmanned aerial, surface and underwater systems.

Over four days at the Romanian Parliament, senior Romanian security, defense, maritime, aviation and emergency officials met with US representatives, including Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg, to focus on counter-unmanned-air-system (C-UAS) measures. The event, jointly organized by the US State Department’s Office for Response and Planning in the WMD sector and Romanian authorities, examined policies, legal bases and acquisition strategies for detecting, tracking and neutralizing aerial, surface and underwater unmanned systems.

Building on summer-time strategic commitments, participants drafted a comprehensive National Action Plan covering legal frameworks, inter-agency coordination, regulation, critical infrastructure protection and defence procurement. Senator Silviu-Iulian Coșa highlighted the need for a coherent national approach on NATO’s Eastern Flank. Both governments pledged continued cooperation to strengthen regional resilience against drone threats.

Why it matters

The plan strengthens Romania’s ability to protect critical infrastructure and supports NATO’s security on its Eastern Flank.
