US Army contracts AI navigation system to replace GPS in contested zones
The Army awarded a contract to TERN for AI-driven positioning and vehicle health tools that operate without GPS or external links.
The US Army has signed a contract with defense startup TERN to install AI-based navigation and maintenance systems on its vehicles, providing an alternative to GPS that can be lost to jamming. The Independently Derived Positioning System uses onboard sensors and offline maps to show vehicle location and route waypoints, while the Vehicle Health & Maintenance System continuously checks fuel levels and mechanical status.
Both modules operate without external connections, and they can sync with satellite data when it becomes available again. TERN’s founders cite experiences in Afghanistan where GPS loss hampered missions as the impetus for the technology. The company also addressed cybersecurity, stating that the offline design eliminates a direct hack vector. Future plans include adapting the modular system for uncrewed ground vehicles and drones.
