US-backed anti-abortion network channels millions into European legal and lobbying efforts

According to a detailed EPF investigation, ultra-right anti-gender and anti-abortion movements have poured substantial resources into European legal battles, lobbying campaigns and affiliated think tanks from 2019 to 2023. The report highlights contributions from US families tied to Trump-style projects, including the DeVos, Uihlein, Green, Waller and Koch dynasties, many of which use donor-advised funds for tax-advantaged, anonymous giving.

European entities such as Hazte Oír, CitizenGo, Alliance Defending Freedom International, World Youth Alliance and the European Center for Law and Justice are among the primary recipients. The European Center for Law and Justice, linked to the American Center for Law and Justice, coordinates prayer vigils outside abortion clinics in cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Girona, Burgos, Elx, Alacant and Sevilla, as well as locations in Croatia, India, Uganda and Pakistan. Additional groups like Heartbeat International and Heritage Foundation are identified as active in spreading anti-abortion messaging and forging alliances with local think tanks, including Spain’s Provida and the Vox-affiliated Disenso foundation.
