US citizen VanDyke expected back in India for Myanmar training trial Friday
US national Mathew Aaron VanDyke is slated to return to India for a Friday court hearing in a case accusing him and six Ukrainians of training Myanmar rebel groups.
The NIA alleges US citizen Mathew Aaron VanDyke and six Ukrainian men conspired to train Myanmar-based ethnic armed groups in drone warfare, assembly and jamming technology after illegally crossing into Myanmar through Mizoram. All seven were detained in March at Indian airports and later allowed to travel home for a month in late September, on the condition they would rejoin the investigation; they were charged only under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, with UAPA charges omitted from the September charge sheet.
VanDyke’s legal team, Rohit Gour and Rohit Dandriyal, have not spoken publicly, but unnamed contacts say he has secured a return flight from the United States and plans to be present at the scheduled Friday hearing. The NIA has not yet confirmed his arrival and the probe remains open, citing logistical support from the Chin National Front and financing by a rebel commander.
