US Defense Secretary proposes televised execution of Fort Hood shooter, sparking propaganda concerns

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans to broadcast the execution of Nidal Hasan in December, arguing it will deter future attacks.

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed a plan to air the execution of Nidal Hasan, the psychiatrist responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, during a live broadcast in December. He justified the action as a deterrent, claiming it would demonstrate the severe consequences of terrorist acts. The proposal has drawn swift condemnation, with many labeling it barbaric and morally questionable.

Analysts point out that Hasan, who had connections to jihadist preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, already considered himself a martyr and that a public execution could further elevate his status among extremist groups. International law professor Thomas Michael McDonnell warned that capital punishment rarely deters suicide terrorism and may instead create new martyrs. The move risks providing al-Qaida, ISIS and similar organizations with potent propaganda material to recruit and inspire future attackers.

Why it matters

A televised execution could unintentionally fuel jihadist propaganda and alter counter-terrorism strategies.
