US democracy scores hit 50-year low, fueling global democratic decline

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance’s annual Global State of Democracy report finds that the United States now registers the lowest levels of democratic health in half a century, with sharp declines in judicial independence, election credibility, freedom of expression, press freedom and access to justice. This deterioration is part of a broader global pattern, marking the 11th consecutive year—since 2025—when more nations have slipped than advanced, the longest continuous downturn in the institute’s records.

The authors attribute much of the US decline to the “threats and actions” of Donald Trump, who they say consolidated executive power and undermined the rule of law at home and abroad. Concurrently, the Uppsala Conflict Data Program recorded 2025 as its most violent year since 1946, suggesting a link between democratic backsliding and conflict. While the report notes positive developments in Australia, Syria, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, it warns that civil society worldwide faces increasing restrictions through strategic lawsuits, foreign-agent laws and criminalisation of protests. Kevin Casas-Zamora stresses that investing in democracy should be central to security strategies, as democratic erosion heightens conflict risk.
