US deploys Patriot batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to shield Gulf energy sites

The United States has sent two Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect key oil and gas facilities amid heightened Iran tensions.

The United States has positioned two additional Patriot air-defence batteries in the Gulf, assigning one to a critical oil facility in Saudi Arabia and another to a natural-gas installation in Qatar. Saudi and Qatari officials had cautioned that Iranian retaliation against their energy infrastructure could follow any renewed large-scale strikes on Iran, prompting the protective deployments. This reinforcement arrives as the Pentagon readies for possible renewed operations against Tehran and augments its presence with extra warships, fighter aircraft and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group.

Analysts note that Patriot interceptor stocks have fallen below 1,000 after extensive use in the Iran conflict. The added batteries aim to shield the region’s oil and gas flow, which, if disrupted, could pressure global markets and key shipping lanes.

Why it matters

Disruptions to Gulf oil and gas could spike global energy prices and affect worldwide markets.
