US disrupts Chinese cyber operation targeting Justice Department, NASA and other agencies
The United States announced it had dismantled a Chinese hacking campaign that infiltrated the Justice Department, NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Senate and additional sensitive entities.
The Justice Department disclosed that it had disrupted a Chinese-sponsored hacking effort that breached multiple high-profile US government networks, including the Justice Department, NASA, the Federal Reserve and the Senate. Authorities seized two web domains used by the intrusion tools dubbed “QScan” and “QTRouter.” An accompanying affidavit identified additional compromised bodies such as the Department of Energy, the Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health and four unnamed companies in the United States and South Korea.
Investigators linked the malicious infrastructure to Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company, a firm in China whose clientele reportedly includes the Ministry of State Security, the People’s Liberation Army and other civilian intelligence entities. Cyber-security analysts say that the past decade has seen a surge in private firms offering specialized offensive services on behalf of Chinese government agencies. The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately return a request for comment, and Beijing typically denies involvement in such activities.
