US envoy Sergio Gor lands in Jammu & Kashmir for first official visit
US ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Jammu & Kashmir, where he is set to meet lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha and chief minister Omar Abdullah.
Sergio Gor, the United States’ ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia, made his inaugural trip to the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday. In Srinagar, he is slated to confer with lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha before proceeding to a meeting with chief minister Omar Abdullah at the Gupkar house, as announced by NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq. Gor’s itinerary includes a departure for Ladakh on Thursday, but it is unclear whether he will see Ladakh lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who is currently in New Delhi and returns to Leh on August 22.
Observers note that Gor’s high-profile status gives the visit added weight, especially in light of recent regional defence agreements. The last US diplomatic delegation to the valley met Omar Abdullah and other local leaders in 2024, following the 2019 revocation of Article 370 that opened the area to foreign visits.
Why it matters
The visit signals renewed US diplomatic engagement in a strategically sensitive region of India.
