US Forest Service proposes new recreation fees across Lake Tahoe sites

The U.S. Forest Service has released a proposal to implement or increase recreation fees at roughly 40 destinations throughout the Lake Tahoe region, including popular spots such as Emerald Bay, Echo Summit, Desolation Wilderness and Kiva Beach. Public input is being accepted until late September, after which a citizen advisory committee will review the suggestions and forward recommendations to the Regional Forester. Under the plan, currently free sites could become paid, and existing fees—like the $5 charge at Eagle Falls Picnic Area—might jump to $15, while new vehicle fees of $15 are slated for places like Kiva Beach.

Proceeds are intended to fund site upkeep, seasonal staff, parking lot repaving and other operational costs. Critics, including the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and local residents such as Denise Upton, argue the measures could limit public access and suggest alternative funding sources. The Forest Service also encourages carpooling to mitigate congestion at fee-affected trails.
