US Halts Green Card Sponsorship for Major Indian IT Firms as Entrepreneur Reflects on His Own Exit

The United States has paused the PERM green-card route for several large Indian IT companies, while entrepreneur Anupam Mittal recounts surrendering his own green card and sees the change as an opportunity for India.

The U.S. government has temporarily suspended the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) process for a group of prominent Indian outsourcing and technology firms, including Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Cognizant and Capgemini, and has also barred Microsoft and Adobe from filing new or pending applications. While the pause does not affect current H-1B visas, it could delay or block a key avenue to U.S. green cards for thousands of Indian professionals.

Against this backdrop, entrepreneur Anupam Mittal, known from Shark Tank India and as the founder of Shaadi.com, shared on LinkedIn his personal experience of relinquishing his own green card after years of success in the United States. He recalled a consular officer in Mumbai urging him to reconsider, his eventual surrender of the card, and the sense of relief he felt. Mittal reflected that staying in the U.S. might have led to a corporate career, but returning home allowed him to launch multiple companies and invest in over 300 startups. He views one outlet immigration uncertainty as an opportunity for India to develop global tech and brand enterprises.

Why it matters
