US medical device maker Stryker faces criminal charges over Cork factory death

Stryker will be prosecuted after a Health and Safety Authority probe linked a 2023 explosion at its Cork plant to the death of worker John Murphy.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Authority into a 2023 explosion at Stryker's Carrigtwohill plant in County Cork has led the Director of Public Prosecutions to recommend criminal charges against the US medical-technology firm. The incident left John Murphy, 41, of Watergrasshill, with third-degree burns covering 75% of his body; he succumbed to his injuries on June 9 after treatment in Dublin. A second worker was hurt in the same event.

The matter is scheduled for its initial hearing in Midleton District Court on October 22, where the specific indictment will be outlined. Murphy's family has criticized the lengthy inquiry and the potential five-year delay of the inquest if the prosecution proceeds. They previously filed High Court claims against Stryker Ireland Limited and Apleona Ireland Limited.

Why it matters

The case highlights corporate accountability for workplace safety and may set precedent for prosecuting multinational firms in Ireland.
