The US Navy has granted Castelion a firm-fixed-price contract worth almost $90 million to develop 50 early-operational Blackbeard hypersonic missiles.
The Navy’s latest procurement move gives Castelion an $89,997,162 firm-fixed contract to push the Blackbeard hypersonic missile toward early operational capability. Marketed as an affordable, mass-producible weapon, Blackbeard is designed to travel at least Mach 5 and reach distances near 500 miles. The award supports the creation of 50 missiles and funds the scaling of engineering, logistics, manufacturing and sustainment infrastructure, with production slated for completion by August 2028.
Castelion, founded by former SpaceX staff and based in Torrance, California, recently secured a $1 billion Series C round that values the firm at $13 billion. Co-founder and CEO Bryon Hargis highlighted the partnership between private capital and the government as a model for rapid defense manufacturing. Successful development could transition the system into a full-scale Navy program, feeding the service’s plan to acquire thousands of hypersonic weapons over the next five years.
