US religious-freedom panel urges sanctions on RSS ahead of Bhagwat's New York trip

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom called for sanctions on members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh instead of high-level meetings as RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat prepares to visit New York.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has urged Washington to sanction members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh rather than host them in high-level talks. In its statement, the commission portrayed the RSS as an umbrella body whose associated groups have carried out attacks on religious minorities. The call comes as RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat readies a three-nation tour starting on August 25, with a planned visit to New York.

The panel highlighted the RSS’s role as the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in India. By recommending sanctions, the USCIRF seeks to pressure the organization over alleged human-rights violations. The recommendation underscores heightened U.S. attention to the RSS’s influence and conduct abroad. No official response from the U.S. government or the RSS has been reported yet.

Why it matters

It signals potential U.S. punitive action against a major Indian nationalist group amid concerns over religious-minority rights.
