US sanctions Turkish Golden Global Bank for funneling Iranian oil money to IRGC

The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Istanbul-based Golden Global Bank for moving Chinese-paid Iranian oil revenues to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, cutting a key financial channel.

On Friday, the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on Istanbul-based Golden Global Bank, labeling it a conduit for Chinese payments for Iranian oil that were funneled to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Gene Lange said the bank had been warned for years and now faces consequences under Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s Operation Economic Outcast, which seeks to force Iran into a peace deal or collapse.

Golden Global, founded in 2019 and describing itself as Turkey’s first interest-free investment bank, controls about $517 million in assets and ranks as the country’s 35th largest bank. The Treasury alleges the bank moved tens of millions of dollars for the IRGC-Qods Force and gave Tehran critical correspondent-banking links. This marks the first sanction of a Turkish bank, following a 2019 case against Halkbank, and it severs what officials call Iran’s “critical financial lifelines” in the NATO ally. Turkish authorities have not yet indicated whether they will seize the bank’s assets, and it is unclear if President Erdoğan consulted President Trump before the action.

Why it matters

The sanction cuts a major channel for Iran’s oil revenue, heightening economic pressure on Tehran and involving a NATO ally.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage frames the sanctions as a strategic effort to cut Iran’s financial lifelines and force Tehran to capitulate, while right-leaning coverage highlights the bank as a conduit for Chinese oil payments funneled to the IRGC and stresses the Treasury’s warning and punitive action; Centrist coverage presents the sanctions in a straightforward, factual manner.

LEFT

Sanctions are portrayed as part of a broader campaign to sever Iran’s critical financial lifelines and pressure Tehran to capitulate.

CENTER

The story is reported factually, noting the entities sanctioned, the issuance of a general license, and the sanctions as part of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign.

RIGHT

The bank is depicted as a conduit for Chinese oil payments to the IRGC, with emphasis on prior warnings and the Treasury’s punitive action.

The left emphasises

  • "critical financial lifelines"
  • "Operation Economic Outcast"
  • "force Tehran to capitulate"

The right emphasises

  • "conduit for Chinese payments for Iranian oil"
  • "funnel... to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps"
  • "warned for years"
