US Secretary of State Dismisses UN Critics While Labeling India’s Protests a Domestic Issue

Secretary of State Marco Rubio mocked UN experts who condemned the police response to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and said he would not comment on the demonstrations, calling them India’s internal matter.

At a recent media interaction, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took aim at United Nations experts who had denounced the heavy-handed police tactics used in Delhi against demonstrators opposing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Describing the UN experts as an “oxymoron,” Rubio dismissed their concerns and reiterated that the situation is a domestic political matter for India. He refused to comment further, stressing that the United States respects the sovereignty of other democracies and that protests are commonplace in America too.

The UN experts had urged Indian authorities to safeguard peaceful assembly and investigate alleged human-rights violations. Rubio’s remarks highlight the tension between international human-rights bodies and national governments over internal security actions.

Why it matters

The exchange underscores diplomatic friction over human-rights criticism and the limits of external commentary on sovereign domestic protests.
