US Secretary Rubio heads commercial delegation to Central Asia and India this week

Secretary Rubio will travel from Oct 17-22 to Uzbekistan’s Samarkand for a C5+1 ministerial and then to Mumbai and Jamnagar for a second official visit to India, meeting officials and business leaders.

From Oct 17 to Oct 22, Secretary Rubio is set to embark on a two-part diplomatic tour. The first leg takes him to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, for a C5+1 ministerial meeting and bilateral discussions with the leaders of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, while heading a US commercial delegation of more than 200 business leaders. The State Department describes the visit as ushering in a new era of commercial cooperation between the United States and Central Asia.

Following the Central Asian segment, Rubio will travel to India, visiting Mumbai and Jamnagar to strengthen the strategic partnership, exchange views on global and regional issues, and explore expanded energy cooperation. He will also meet Indian business leaders to highlight investment opportunities. This trip follows President Donald Trump’s November White House gathering with the five resource-rich Central Asian nations.

Why it matters

The tour aims to deepen US trade and strategic ties with Central Asia and India amid shifting global dynamics.
