USPS Deploys Nearly 1,000 Prosegur Armed Guards to Hundreds of Facilities Ahead of Midterms

Nearly 1,000 armed guards from Prosegur have been assigned to at least 55 USPS sites nationwide. The deployment comes just weeks before the midterm elections.

A Raw Story investigation found that the United States Postal Service has contracted Prosegur, a multinational security firm, to station nearly 1,000 armed guards at a minimum of 55 postal facilities ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. The guards are deployed in cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, Phoenix, San Diego and Tampa, and are placed only at sites employing more than 1,000 workers. Frank Albergo of the Postal Police Officers Association warned that the guards are fully controlled by the private contractor, with no federal oversight, raising concerns about a possible perception of election interference.

Mark Ungar, a professor at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice, suggested the arrangement could provide the Trump administration with a retroactive alibi for any voting disputes. The United States Postal Inspection Service defended the move as a measure to deter criminal activity and protect employees. The story unfolds amid ongoing disputes over mail-in voting, recent Supreme Court rulings, and a new rule announced by Postmaster General David Steiner that could withhold ballot services from states that refuse to share voter rolls with the Trump administration.

Why it matters

The presence of private armed guards at mail facilities could affect public confidence in the election process.
