USS Theodore Roosevelt set to replace USS George Washington in Middle East deployment

The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is stationed at Naval Base San Diego and is slated to head to the Middle East to replace the USS George Washington (CVN-73), which is currently on station in the Arabian Sea. This move follows a recent carrier shuffle that saw the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) relieved after more than 250 days at sea, highlighting a growing strain on the limited carrier fleet. Chief of Naval Operations Daryl Caudle and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Perryman said the Navy is extending deployments in small increments, leaving crews and families uncertain about end dates and increasing stress.

While longer tours are likely to continue, officials are exploring possible port calls in Africa, India, or Singapore to give crews needed downtime. Transit routes remain limited due to threats in the Bab-al-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, complicating access to the Suez Canal and Mediterranean ports. The Roosevelt, nicknamed “The Big Stick,” returns to a region it has patrolled repeatedly over its four-decade service.
