UT athletics generate $1.15 billion impact, boosting ten key Tennessee sectors

University of Tennessee athletics produced an estimated $1.15 billion economic impact across Tennessee during the 2025 fiscal year, according to a study by consulting firm Tripp Umbach. Direct contributions, including payroll and capital costs, totaled $410.2 million, while indirect and induced effects added $739.8 million, generating $53.9 million in state tax revenue. Ten industries—such as higher education, construction, full-service restaurants and hotels—accounted for nearly three-quarters of the total benefit.

In Knox County alone, one outlet's program supported 6,576 jobs and generated $931.5 million, with visitor spending of $316.5 million. Student-athletes themselves spent about $14.5 million statewide on personal expenses. Athletics director Danny White noted the data will aid discussions with business leaders and officials, emphasizing the collective advantage of one outlet success.
