Utah couple buys gym after mountain-bike crash saves man's life
Joey Wood survived a serious mountain-bike accident in Utah and later purchased the Burn Boot Camp gym where he and his wife Kari had trained.
While on a weekly mountain-bike outing with his dad Scott and brothers, Joey Wood was thrown from his bike and sustained a chest wound that threatened his life. Emergency responders, including a firefighter waiting nearby, rushed him to the University of Utah Hospital, where surgeons repaired a cracked sternum, a collapsed lung and two tiny holes in his heart. After an intensive stay in the ICU, Joey credited his prior fitness and the encouragement of the Burn Boot Camp gym, which he and his wife Kari had joined a year and a half earlier.
Members of the gym organized meals, fundraisers and household assistance while he healed. Following his discharge, the Woods purchased the South Jordan Burn Boot Camp franchise, continuing the gym’s role in their community while maintaining their other jobs.
