Utah defensive tackle group seeks to fix last season's run-defense woes
Utah’s defensive tackles are overhauling technique and strength after allowing record rushing yards in the 2025 season.
Last season Utah’s defense struggled against the run, surrendering 472 yards in two games, including a 293-yard performance by Kansas State’s Joe Jackson. Defensive coordinator Colton Swan and defensive-tackle coach Luther Elliss have made eliminating gap-shooting and improving hand technique a priority. Sophomore Pupu Sepulona and freshman Karson Kaufusi, who saw significant playing time after injuries, are expected to build on their modest freshman stats.
New transfers such as Lucas Samsula, Jamal Wallace, Dilan Battle, and San Jose State’s Jireh Moe add bulk, with Moe already earning a high Pro Football Focus grade. Strength coach Steve Saunders says the group has added size while retaining speed. The coaching staff believes these adjustments will help the Utes avoid repeat rushing lapses and improve overall defensive performance.
Why it matters
Improving the defensive line could prevent repeat run-defense failures and boost Utah's competitiveness this season.
