Utah expands AI sandbox to let startup prescribe acne medication

Utah regulators approved a pilot that lets Nolla Health’s AI assess acne patients and potentially issue prescriptions, with clinician oversight at first.

Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy unveiled an expansion of its AI sandbox, authorizing a startup called Nolla Health to launch an artificial-intelligence service that screens patients for mild-to-moderate acne. The system will collect structured intake information and analyze skin photos to decide whether a low-risk medication is appropriate. In the initial phase, a licensed clinician will review the AI’s recommendation and sign the prescription; the regulator indicated that future phases may remove this human check.

Nolla Health, which secured $4.5 million in funding from investors including General Catalyst, plans to use the platform for additional health conditions. The pilot reflects Utah’s strategy of waiving certain regulations to enable AI product testing under state oversight.

Why it matters

It shows how state regulators are testing AI-driven medical prescribing, potentially reshaping healthcare delivery and oversight.
