Utah Governor Signs Order to Launch Statewide Quantum Technology Program

Spencer Cox announced a statewide push for quantum technology by signing an executive order that forms the Utah Quantum Initiative and a Quantum Coordination Council. The council’s mandate includes advancing research, building a skilled workforce, fostering commercial growth, securing the supply chain, and partnering with defense agencies. Leadership will come from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, with the Nucleus Institute, overseen by the Utah Board of Higher Education, acting as co-lead.

Jefferson Moss explained the initiative has been in preparation for about eight months and seeks to manage both the promise and cybersecurity risks of quantum advances. The plan aligns with a broader national effort, echoing a June executive order from President Donald Trump to accelerate quantum computing. The council is required to deliver a status report by March 30, 2027 and continue monitoring until the order expires at the close of 2028.
