Utah voters cite cost of living and jobs as top midterm concerns
A new poll shows Utah residents rank the economy and inflation above all issues as they head into the upcoming midterm elections.
One outlet/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll conducted by Morning Consult between Aug. 6-11 asked Utah voters which issues matter most for the midterms. Nearly half (48%) identified the economy and jobs as the decisive factor, and 41% named inflation as their top concern, dwarfing other items like corruption (27%) and immigration (23%). When queried about past voting patterns, 43% said they consistently backed Republican candidates, compared with 28% for Democrats, but the proportion of undecided voters grew to roughly 14% for the upcoming election.
Support for Republican-leaning ballots slipped to 39%, while Democratic support edged up to 31%. Jason Perry of the Hinckley Institute of Politics cautioned that the rise in voter ambivalence reflects broader frustration rather than a sweeping partisan shift, though even modest changes can matter in competitive contests. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3 points.
